Overview
Palisades Tahoe — formerly known as Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows — is one of the premier ski destinations in North America. The combined resort spans two interconnected mountains on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, offering a jaw-dropping 6,000 acres of skiable terrain, 270 runs, and 42 lifts. The resort hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics and has maintained its reputation as a world-class destination ever since.
With an average annual snowfall of 450 inches and a summit elevation of 9,050 feet, Palisades Tahoe delivers reliable conditions and a season that stretches from November into May. The terrain is remarkably diverse, ranging from gentle groomed boulevards to exposed granite chutes and massive open bowls.
Terrain
The Palisades side of the resort is known for its dramatic alpine terrain. Wide-open bowls, steep chutes, and cliff-studded faces define the upper mountain, while the lower elevations offer well-groomed intermediate runs and beginner-friendly zones. The village-adjacent base area provides easy access to learning terrain, making the resort approachable for first-timers despite its big-mountain reputation.
Alpine Meadows adds a different character — more tree skiing, rolling terrain, and a laid-back feel that complements the Palisades side. The interconnect gondola, Base to Base, links the two mountains and allows skiers to explore the full resort without needing to drive between base areas.
The terrain parks are well-maintained and offer progression from small features up through advanced setups. The resort’s freestyle programs have produced numerous competitive athletes over the years.
Facilities
The Village at Palisades features a pedestrian plaza with shops, restaurants, and lodging at the base of the mountain. Dining ranges from slope-side grills to fine dining, and the apres-ski scene is vibrant. The resort operates large-scale rental and retail operations, and the ski school is staffed by highly credentialed instructors.
Lodging options around the resort and in nearby Truckee and Tahoe City are plentiful, ranging from slopeside hotels to vacation rentals and budget-friendly motels.
Getting There
Palisades Tahoe is located off Highway 89 between Truckee and Tahoe City, roughly 3.5 hours from the San Francisco Bay Area and about 7 hours from Los Angeles. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is approximately 45 minutes away, making fly-in trips viable. Winter road conditions can be challenging — I-80 over Donner Summit is subject to chain controls and occasional closures during major storms. Check Caltrans conditions before departing.
