Overview

Heavenly Mountain Resort is one of Lake Tahoe’s most iconic ski destinations, and for good reason. Straddling the California-Nevada state line above South Lake Tahoe, Heavenly offers 4,800 acres of skiable terrain, the largest vertical drop in the Tahoe region at 3,527 feet, and views of Lake Tahoe that are genuinely breathtaking. The combination of serious skiing, a vibrant town, and casino nightlife makes Heavenly a unique proposition in the world of ski resorts.

The resort averages 360 inches of snowfall per season and supplements natural snow with one of the most extensive snowmaking systems in the western United States. With 97 runs served by 28 lifts including the famous Heavenly Gondola, there is enough terrain to keep any skier occupied for days.

Terrain

Heavenly’s terrain is split between the California and Nevada sides of the resort, each with its own character. The California side features the iconic lake-view runs, groomed intermediate cruisers, and access to the steeper terrain near the summit. The Nevada side is generally less crowded and offers excellent tree skiing, steeper pitches, and the Mott and Killebrew canyon areas — some of the most challenging in-bounds terrain at Tahoe.

The 45% intermediate terrain makes Heavenly a strong choice for the average skier. Long, well-groomed runs like Ridge Run and Lakeview offer miles of consistent cruising with stunning scenery. Advanced skiers will find plenty of challenge in the canyon terrain, while beginners have dedicated learning areas near the California base lodge and at the top of the gondola.

The resort operates terrain parks on the California side, with features appropriate for a range of ability levels. The longest run at the resort stretches an impressive 5.5 miles from summit to base.

Facilities

The Heavenly Gondola is both a ski lift and a sightseeing attraction, rising from the heart of South Lake Tahoe’s casino district to an observation deck and the upper mountain. The village at the gondola base features shops, restaurants, and an ice rink. Multiple on-mountain lodges provide food service across the resort.

South Lake Tahoe offers an enormous range of lodging, dining, and entertainment. The proximity to casinos on the Nevada side adds a nightlife dimension that no other Tahoe resort can match. Equipment rentals are available at the base areas and throughout town.

Getting There

Heavenly is located in South Lake Tahoe, accessible via US-50 from Sacramento (approximately 3 hours) or via US-395 and Highway 207 from the south. From Los Angeles, the drive is roughly 7 to 8 hours. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is about an hour away, and the Lake Tahoe Airport in South Lake Tahoe handles smaller regional flights. Winter driving conditions on the mountain passes require caution — carry chains and check road conditions before traveling.
